Mesmer (1734-1815) experimented with the effect of magnets upon persons, and in stroking their bodies with magnets, he discovered that he could often induce what we call now hypnosis. As a physician he adopted the magnetic method for healing certain diseases. In 1776 he abandoned the use of metal magnets, speaking only thereafter of animal magnetism.; Crabtree 250.
